Sambhar Salt

The complete guide to Sambhar Lake's natural alkaline salt —
how it's made, what's in it, and why it's the world's best alkaline salt.

What is Sambhar Salt?

India's Natural Alkaline Lake Salt

Sambhar salt is natural salt harvested from Sambhar Lake, India's largest inland saltwater lake, set in the Aravalli foothills of Rajasthan. Unlike refined table salt or ocean sea salt, Sambhar Lake salt is naturally alkaline (pH 9+), carries 54+ trace minerals, and is formed slowly by the sun — not by industry.

For over a thousand years, salt has been gathered from this lake's mineral-dense brine beds. Today, Puresol continues that tradition, hand-harvesting Sambhar salt through the ancient Suryatapa sun-curing process to deliver what many consider the world's best alkaline salt — pure, mineral-rich and free of microplastics.

The Source

Sambhar Lake — A Ramsar Wetland

Sambhar Lake spans roughly 230 sq km and is a designated Ramsar wetland of international importance, famous for the thousands of flamingos that feed on its brine. Its waters are extraordinarily rich in dissolved minerals washed down from the surrounding hills over millennia.

Because the lake is inland and fed by mineral runoff rather than the ocean, Sambhar salt is naturally free of the microplastics now detected in most commercial sea salts — one of the biggest reasons health-conscious buyers seek out genuine Sambhar Lake salt.

How Sambhar Salt Is Harvested

Mineral-rich groundwater rises into shallow evaporation beds, where Rajasthan's intense sun and dry wind slowly draw off the water over 9–12 months. As the brine concentrates, the rare pink microalgae Dunaliella salina blooms, tinting the crystals a natural pink and enriching them with beta-carotene (pro-Vitamin A).

The salt is then hand-collected, never chemically refined or heat-blasted. This slow, solar method — the Suryatapa process — is what locks the full mineral spectrum into every grain. Read the full science →

What's Inside

54+ Minerals, Naturally Alkaline

Sambhar salt naturally exceeds pH 9, making it one of the most alkaline salts available — a direct result of the lake's geology, not chemical treatment. Alongside sodium, it carries 54+ trace minerals including potassium, magnesium and calcium, plus the beta-carotene contributed by Dunaliella salina.

These naturally occurring minerals are independently verifiable — see our health benefits page and our certifications & lab reports, including an independent NABL-accredited beta-carotene analysis.

How It Compares

Sambhar Salt vs Sea, Himalayan & Table Salt

Sea salt is evaporated from ocean water and can contain microplastics. Himalayan pink salt is mined rock salt coloured by iron oxide. Table salt is heavily refined down to nearly pure sodium chloride with anti-caking agents. Sambhar salt is sun-evaporated inland-lake salt that is naturally alkaline, naturally pink from living microalgae, mineral-complete, and free of microplastics — which is why it stands apart as the world's best alkaline salt.
